What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are a group of developmental brain disorders that affect social and communication skills, as well as behaviors. Autistic disorder, Asperger’s syndrome, and PDD-NOS are the most prevalent ASDs. Currently, 1 in every 110 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (and 1 in 70 boys). This *staggering* amount makes it more important than ever for people to be aware of what ASDs are and what they mean for those diagnosed.

While developmental therapy for behavioral, speech, and occupational skills (such as fine and gross motor) are all very important, compassion and understanding from families with typically developing children is often just as vital.

It is important to note that, while often developmentally challenged, Autistic kids can actually be very intelligent. This short synopsis is but a tiny piece of the very complex puzzle that is Autism…For more information, check out the link at the Autism Speaks site:
